Students in St Gerald’s DLS College are encouraged to get involved in both the BT Young Scientist and Scifest. The aim of these competitions is to encourage a love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) through active, collaborative, enquiry-based learning and to give students a chance to present and display their scientific experiments and investigations.
The BT Young Scientist is open to all second level students aged between 12-18, and students can enter as an individual or in groups of up to 3 students. There are four categories: Technology, Biological and Ecological Sciences, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences. There are over 2000 entries every year with only 550 chosen to display their project in the RDS in January.
The SciFest programme consists of four distinct strands – local, regional, national and international. Students can complete a project on any aspect of Science and Technology and all groups immediately go through to their local competition.
Taking part in both competitions is an exciting and fun time for all students. They make new friends and create unforgettable experiences.
