Basketball was first played in St. Gerald’s DLS College in Castlebar in 1985 with the arrival of Br. Denis O’ Rourke from Ballyvourney in Co. Cork, where he coached school teams to Munster titles. St. Gerald’s schools basketball success goes hand in hand with the Castlebar juvenile basketball scene. The school also had close ties to the local division one senior men’s team.
St. Gerald’s has had a number of international panel and team players. Including Robert Fahey, Danny Fahey, Mark Fahey, Paul McGuinness, James Durcan, Tommy Canavan, Hermann Heyl, Kevin Mc Guinness, Johnny Kelly, Finin Canavan, Alan Casey and Aidan O’Shea.
In 2001 St. Gerald’s were represented in three All Ireland Finals, U16C U16A and U19B, with the youngest U16 squad prevailing on the day winning the school’s first All Ireland title. In 2002 the U16A’s were All Ireland finalists in both the Bank of Ireland cup and the Cadbury’s time out league. In 2003 the U19A’s finally won the coveted All Ireland League and cup titles. In 2005 we were once again U16A All- Ireland finalists and in 2007 we again reached the U19A All Ireland League Final.
