Music at St Gerald's DLS College
Music has been offered as an Examination Subject for both Junior Cert/Cycle and Leaving Cert in St Gerald’s College since 2001.
All TY students study Music for one six-week module. They learn how to play a musical instrument (Ukulele) and the basics of Music Theory, The Instruments of the Orchestra and Irish Music. Classroom performances include Body Percussion, Rhythmic Instrument playing, Chair drumming and Hand Bells.
Music students and musicians in the school have always enhanced College school life through their Music Making at school events such as Opening School Mass, Carol Service, Open Night, Seachtain na Gaeilge, School Musical, De La Salle Mass, Graduation Mass, 1916 Commemorations, Achievements Day and the highlight of the musical calendar our Annual Spring Recital held in the local Arts Centre: The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. Our students have also performed in the Community e.g. at the Mayo International Choral Festival, Christmas Fair in St Anthony’s School, Coffee Morning for the Irish Cancer Society, Christmas Carols in the Sacred Heart Home, Radio Shows on CRCfm, Mayo University Hospital, Awakening, Sligo Choral Festival and the Annual Parish Carol Service. Our Exam classes have attended concerts in the National Concert Hall and we also attend local concerts such as Castlebar Concert Band, Choral Concerts or Musicals or enjoy music workshops with e.g. Music Generation Mayo, Mayo County Council Arts Office etc
Each year brings something new and different!
December 2021 welcomed the inaugural Music Week. During this week, students participated in Workshops, enjoyed Concerts, attended Talks, participated in Competitions and received well wishes videos from Celebrities. Musical themes were also incorporated into other subjects like English, Gaeilge, Home Economics, Woodwork, French and R.E.
